Allegations of Toxic Relationships and sexting Surface Against Maine Democratic Senate Candidate Graham Platner

The New York Times published a story on Thursday, June 4, 2026, containing allegations from Graham Platner’s ex-girlfriends about toxic relationships and one allegation that he physically harmed a woman. The article followed earlier reports that Platner, a Democratic Senate candidate in Maine, had sent sexually explicit text messages to multiple women.

Will Upton, senior politics editor at the Daily Caller, stated that the New York Times performed a soft catch and kill on the story to limit damage to Platner’s campaign. Upton also said the outlet screwed over the alleged victim, Lyndsey Fifield. Cheyenne Hunt, leader of the group Gen Z for Change, backtracked on her endorsement of Platner on June 4, 2026.

Hunt said the scandal put the party in a horrible position and that it was Platner’s fault. “Women are never an acceptable sacrifice for an election. Our character is defined by the decisions we make when things are hard, but the right side of history here is clear.

This behavior is inexcusable,” Hunt said. Robert Zimmerman, a New York-based Democratic National Committee member, told Politico that Platner has not been able to credibly justify his conduct and that Democrats who defend him sound like Republicans defending Donald Trump after the Access Hollywood tape.

Politico reported that Democrats are at each other’s throats and they don’t know what to do about it.

The same report stated that some Democratic donors are growing skittish about Platner. A Democratic consultant told Politico that other donors do not give a rat’s tush about any of Platner’s scandals. The consultant said anybody who beats Susan Collins will do and suggested that in the Trump era political scandals no longer pack the same punch.
