Former NFL wide receiver Alshon Jeffery agreed to conditions including volunteer work and restitution payments that could lead to dismissal of insurance fraud charges within 60 days. Usa Today reported the agreement was signed July 10.
Usa TodayFormer NFL wide receiver Alshon Jeffery reached a deal with San Diego prosecutors to have two felony insurance fraud charges dismissed if he meets specified conditions within 60 days, Usa Today reported. The conditions include 50 hours of volunteer service work, a $2,500 payment to the driver whose car he rear-ended, $840.46 paid to Kemper Insurance, and $500 paid to the California Department of Insurance Anti-Fraud Fund.
The conditions document was signed July 10 by Jeffery, his attorney Brian Watkins, and San Diego Deputy District Attorney H. Meliana Johnson. The San Diego District Attorney’s office advised the court the same day that Jeffery has already paid the financial restitution requirements.
If Jeffery satisfies all conditions and remains law-abiding with no new criminal cases after 60 days, the charges will be dismissed in the interest of justice, according to the conditions document.
Jeffery was accused of filing a false insurance claim after a car accident on northbound Interstate 5 in San Diego on September 21. Court records show Jeffery obtained a new insurance policy on September 24, three days after the crash, and filed a claim stating the accident occurred on September 28.
The insurance company denied the claim after obtaining evidence from the other driver documenting the actual date of the accident.
Jeffery was arrested in April after failing to appear in court for his arraignment in March. Jeffery earned more than $63 million during his NFL career from 2012 to 2020, according to Spotrac. He caught three passes for 73 yards and a touchdown in Super Bowl LII when the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the New England Patriots 41-33.
