California Highway Patrol issued an Amber Alert for 4-year-old Daleyza Fregoso after authorities determined she had been taken by her father, Ruben Fregoso, 40. Police said the father is also a person of interest in the death of the girl's mother. Los Angeles police responded to a welfare check at a West Adams residence and found the body of an adult female inside.
Investigators said preliminary findings indicate the victim died as a result of violence.
The white Land Rover linked to the pair was later found at a shopping center in San Ysidro, San Diego County, near the international border with Mexico. Authorities said Ruben Fregoso had recently made statements indicating he intended to flee the country.
Daleyza is described as 3 feet tall, weighing 45 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Ruben Fregoso is listed as 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing 200 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Police are asking the public for information on the whereabouts of both individuals.
The Amber Alert remains active.
