Two organizations are coordinating events for the nation's 250th anniversary this year. One operates under a congressional commission created in 2016. The other functions as a public-private partnership launched by the administration in January 2025.

America250 was established by federal law in 2016 to plan and coordinate activities marking the July 4, 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence. A supporting nonprofit works with lawmakers on programming that includes student field trips, volunteer drives, and a time capsule scheduled to open in 2276.

Freedom 250 is organizing athletic competitions, a prayer gathering on the National Mall, and a 16-day concert series originally called the Great American State Fair.

Several performers withdrew after the May 27 lineup announcement, citing concerns over the event's political tone. Country musician Martina McBride wrote that she had been told the show would be non-partisan. Bret Michaels stated the presentation had shifted into something more divisive than he had agreed to join.

"I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to be a voice for those who have felt like they didn’t have one. " — Martina McBride, May 2026 (USA Today). In response, the administration announced the concert would be replaced by a rally.

Freedom 250 spokesperson Rachel Reisner said the organization remains focused on events that honor history and engage Americans. The New York Times reported in February that Freedom 250 had drawn criticism over donation practices and religious emphasis in several initiatives. Congressional Democrats expressed concern about access-for-donations arrangements.

Freedom 250 maintains that its programming welcomes participants who share the goal of commemorating the anniversary in a unifying manner.
