Americans are projected to eat 150 million hot dogs on July 4, according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council. The total would stretch from Washington, D.C., to Los Angeles more than five times if laid end to end. The figure caps “hot dog season,” the period from Memorial Day to Labor Day that accounts for 38 percent of annual retail sales, or about $1.16 billion.
July alone represents 10 percent of yearly retail volume.
The Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest is scheduled at Surf and Stillwell avenues. Joey Chestnut, who holds 17 titles and a record of 76 hot dogs and buns in 2021, is favored to eat about 70 hot dogs in ten minutes. Miki Sudo, the women’s record holder at 51 hot dogs and buns, is seeking a fifth consecutive title.
Nathan’s officials said they expect larger crowds than the usual 35,000 because of tourists attending the World Cup in New York. A company spokesperson reported higher sales at the Coney Island flagship and boardwalk locations compared with last year.
The company has held regular meetings with city agencies, including police, to coordinate security.
DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetMGM list odds on the contest, with Chestnut at -2500 to win and an over/under line of 70.5 hot dogs. Kalshi offers contracts on the winner and whether the record of 76 is broken. The American Gaming Association reported $166.94 billion in legal sports bets for 2025, an 11 percent increase from 2024.
Prediction markets have added novelty events to maintain trading volume during the summer sports lull.
