Amphibious Assault Ship Replaces Standard ARG in Caribbean Under New Navy Plan
The Navy has deployed a purpose-built Marine Air-Ground Task Force to the Caribbean as part of a new flexible deployment model. The force replaces a conventional Amphibious Ready Group and operates from both shore nodes and an amphibious assault ship.
ecns.cnA U.S. Navy amphibious assault ship and more than 1,300 Marines and Sailors are now operating in the Caribbean under a new deployment arrangement called Littoral Combat Force-24. The force replaced the previous Amphibious Ready Group that had been assigned to the Southern Command area.
It is described as a purpose-built Marine Air-Ground Task Force engineered for distributed operations rather than a standard ARG/MEU deployment.
It will operate from both shore-based locations and aboard the amphibious assault ship Fort Lauderdale. Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Daryl Caudle said the tailored deployment concept allows the Navy to present forces in ways that achieve more with fewer assets.
Amphibious assault ship Boxer left Singapore on May 30 after a 12-day maintenance and resupply stop. Dock landing ship Comstock is operating in the Central Command area alongside the Tripoli ARG to enforce the blockade of Iranian ports. Amphibious transport dock Portland was last reported training in the Indo-Pacific Command area.
Amphibious assault ship Iwo Jima and the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit are returning to the United States after nearly 10 months in the Southern Command area. Amphibious assault ship Kearsarge is in New Orleans for Sail 250 events. Makin Island completed Surface Warfare Advanced Training on May 28.
America, Bataan, and Wasp are in or have recently completed maintenance periods.
