Android Auto to Receive Major Interface and Navigation Updates in 2026
Google announced a series of updates to Android Auto and vehicles with Google built-in during its Android Show: I/O Edition. The changes include a redesigned user interface, widget support, immersive 3D navigation maps and new Gemini AI features. The updates are scheduled to roll out later in 2026.
EngadgetGoogle announced during the Android Show: I/O Edition that 2026 will bring some of the largest updates yet to Android Auto and vehicles equipped with Google built-in. The company is overhauling the Android Auto user interface with its Material 3 Expressive design language.
The redesign introduces more prominent fonts, updated wallpapers and smoother animations. It will also add support for widgets on the car's display, allowing drivers to customize the layout with shortcuts to favorite contacts, weather information and controls such as digital garage door openers.
The interface will adapt to vehicles with non-standard screen shapes. The most significant addition is Immersive Navigation, which uses detailed 3D maps to display traffic lights, stop signs, lane counts and nearby buildings. Google is expanding artificial intelligence capabilities in Android Auto through Gemini.
The updates include improved contextual awareness that can surface addresses, appointments and other information relevant to a trip. This is intended to reduce the need for drivers to look at their phones or screens while driving. The platform is also gaining support for high-definition video playback at up to 60 frames per second.
When a driver begins moving while video is playing, the system will automatically switch the content to audio-only mode. Media applications including music services are receiving visual updates, and the platform will support spatial audio through Dolby Atmos when the vehicle hardware and manufacturer allow it.
Vehicles with Google built-in will receive tighter integration between the operating system and the car's hardware. Gemini will be able to explain the meaning of dashboard indicator lights or determine whether an item will fit in the vehicle's trunk.
Immersive Navigation will use the car's onboard cameras to identify the current lane and deliver more precise real-time directions. The company stated that the updates to Android Auto and vehicles with Google built-in will begin rolling out later this year.
