Labour MP Andy Burnham has the support of 322 of the party's 403 MPs in his bid to become leader and prime minister. Chancellor Rachel Reeves urged him to arrive with a detailed plan for office.
abcnews.go.comAndy Burnham has secured the backing of 322 of Labour’s 403 MPs for his campaign to become party leader and prime minister. The tally leaves him one short of the threshold that would make a rival candidacy mathematically impossible. If no other candidate enters the race, Burnham expects to become Labour leader on 17 July and prime minister on 20 July.
His platform centers on the largest redistribution of power from Whitehall in modern British history, including a new No 10 North hub to direct resources outside London. Chancellor Rachel Reeves told BBC One’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg that Burnham must enter Downing Street with a worked-through plan.
“Governing is hard in Britain, and lots of challenges and shocks will come his way,” she said.
She added that he should stay focused on the priorities that first drew him into politics. Reeves described the economy Burnham would inherit as stronger than the one she took over two years earlier. She said the government’s strategy had restored stability, allowed interest rates to fall, and produced the first productivity growth seen in a long period.
She acknowledged that Starmer’s administration had lost the confidence of MPs and voters because people wanted faster change. Former transport secretary Louise Haigh said Burnham had been planning a leadership challenge for at least the past year. She said the path became clear after Labour’s poor results in the May local elections.
Burnham has indicated he would introduce an early package of cost-of-living measures. In a speech last month he said his goal was to “lift the country back up” and restore hope among voters.
