Andy Burnham Secures 349 Labour MP Nominations, Exceeding Threshold to Block Other Candidates

Andy Burnham received 27 additional nominations on Monday afternoon, bringing the total number of Labour MPs backing his leadership bid to 349. This figure exceeds 85 percent of the party's parliamentary membership and prevents any other candidate from mounting a challenge, which would require 20 percent support.

Burnham was elected MP for Makerfield last month after serving as a minister under former leaders Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

He launched his campaign following Labour's heavy losses in local elections in May and Keir Starmer's resignation announcement last month. Starmer had faced criticism over scandals and the party's stance on Israel's war on Gaza. Tens of thousands of Labour members left the party in response to that position after the party won a landslide majority two years ago.

He pledged to give areas outside London more autonomy and power. Gareth Dale, an academic at Brunel University focusing on politics, said Burnham faces a tricky task in reaching out to constituencies that have shifted support to other parties.
