Angels Fire General Manager Perry Minasian, Name John Mozeliak Interim Leader

The Los Angeles Angels fired general manager Perry Minasian on Friday evening and appointed former St. Louis Cardinals executive John Mozeliak to oversee day-to-day baseball operations while the club searches for a permanent replacement. Minasian had led the team's baseball operations for five-plus seasons.

During that period the Angels compiled a 392-500 record and never finished above third place in the American League West. Team president Molly Jolly said in a statement that Minasian had been a valued leader who worked to strengthen the baseball operations department.

The Angels have posted 10 consecutive losing seasons and have not reached the postseason since 2014. This year the club holds a 34-49 record and is on pace for a third straight last-place finish in its division. Mozeliak, 57, previously served as general manager and president of baseball operations for the Cardinals from 2007 through 2025. He stepped down after the 2025 season.

Mozeliak will address several immediate matters before a new general manager is hired. One issue involves outfielder Mike Trout, who holds a full no-trade clause and is owed $35.45 million annually from 2027 through 2030. Another decision concerns the July 30 trade deadline.

Several players under team control through at least 2027, including starters Reid Detmers and José Soriano, could draw interest from other clubs. The Angels also hold the 12th overall pick in the amateur draft that begins July 11. The organization has previously favored college players expected to advance quickly to the major leagues.
