U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday to pursue an initial public offering this year. The company behind the chatbot Claude said the price and number of shares have not yet been set.

Anthropic was founded five years ago by chief executive Dario Amodei and a handful of other executives. Amodei left OpenAI after disagreements with its chief executive Sam Altman. The filing values Anthropic at more than $965 billion based on its most recent private funding round.

That figure exceeds OpenAI's most recent private valuation of $852 billion. Anthropic has told investors it expects to turn a profit in the first half of this year. Sales of its Claude product and related services have grown the company said.

U.S. Department of Defense late last year required Anthropic to accept terms in a $200 million contract allowing government agencies to use Claude for any lawful use. Amodei made his concerns public, stating the language raised the possibility of use in mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons.

President Donald Trump denounced Anthropic. S. agency from using Claude. Anthropic launched legal action against the government, and the lawsuit remains ongoing.

Sam Altman told CNBC that OpenAI intends to go public but is in no rush. "We'll do it when it makes sense," he said. Anthropic's plans come alongside those of Elon Musk's SpaceX. OpenAI is also reportedly considering going public this year.
