Anthropic restricts non-U.S. access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models
Anthropic halted access for non-U.S. users to its latest models after a U.S. government directive. European organizations that had been testing the systems now face sudden loss of service.
EuronewsAnthropic stopped non-U.S. users from accessing its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models last Friday after receiving a directive from the Trump administration that cited national security concerns. The company had previously allowed research labs, technology firms, and hospitals across Europe to test the systems for operational use.
European reaction Officials from several European countries and the European Commission stated that reliance on foreign AI systems leaves organizations subject to decisions made outside their control. The European Commission had announced earlier this month a plan to increase data-center capacity and support domestic AI development under the Cloud and AI Development Act.
Current constraints Europe currently operates fewer large-scale computing facilities than major U.S. technology companies, according to Euronews reporting. The same report noted that European officials have discussed cooperation with other countries to combine computing resources, though no formal agreement has been reached.
