Anthropic PBC received U.S. approval to restore some access to its Mythos 5 artificial intelligence model after resolving Trump administration concerns about national security risks. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated in a letter dated Friday that the company had worked with the government to address risks associated with the covered models and that the efforts had yielded significant progress, allowing release to certain trusted partners.
The clearance follows a government order two weeks earlier that barred Anthropic from giving foreign nationals access to Mythos 5 and Fable 5. That order prompted the company to disable all global access to both systems. Anthropic said it received notice that Mythos 5 can be redeployed to a small group of cyber defenders and infrastructure providers and that it is working to restore their access as quickly as possible.
Commerce Department spokesman Benno Kass said Anthropic worked diligently in two weeks to ensure America remains the global leader in AI while safeguarding security. The Commerce letter does not mention any change to restrictions on Fable 5. Anthropic said it is pleased with the progress and continues to work with the government to expand access to Mythos 5 and make Fable 5 available for general use again.
A person familiar with the matter said conversations are expected to continue over the weekend as the company aims to restore access to Fable 5 soon. The same person said Anthropic is also working with the government to develop a policy framework for handling similar situations in the future.
Earlier this month Anthropic released Fable 5 as the first public-facing version of its Mythos-class model.
