Apple Admits Longstanding Search Failures, Announces Full Rebuild of Spotlight, Photos and Mail Indexing
The company introduced a new Search Index and ranking system to improve results in Spotlight, Photos and Mail. The changes apply to both new and older content on Apple devices.
macrumors.comApple announced a completely rebuilt Search function at its WWDC 2026 event. The update targets long-standing problems locating known emails, photos and other stored content. Stacey Ford, vice president of OS Program Management at Apple, described the issue during the opening keynote.
“We’ve all had that moment where you search for something you know is there, but it just won’t show up,” she said. Apple rebuilt the foundation of search that powers Spotlight, Photos and Mail on iOS, iPadOS and macOS. The new system centers on the Search Index, a catalog the device builds of all user content.
The Search Index is designed to let the device understand what content exists and where to locate it. Apple also re-architected Search to reindex both new and older content. The Mail app will receive a new ranking system intended to surface relevant messages regardless of when they were sent.
TechCrunch reported the announcement took place on or before June 8, 2026.
