Apple Announces Beta Siri AI Agent Powered Chiefly by Google Gemini, Delayed in EU and China
The company announced a multimodal Siri agent that integrates across devices and apps, with a beta launch planned later this year.
The VergeApple opened its annual developer conference on June 9, 2026, with the introduction of a new Siri AI designed to function as an all-in-one agent across Apple devices. ” The new Siri includes multimodal features, a dedicated app, and the ability to pull information from the internet, emails, texts, contacts, notes, and calendars.
Executives stated that user data involved in agentic tasks would be processed on-device and via private cloud compute and then deleted.
Craig Federighi, Apple’s SVP of software engineering, said privacy in AI is a non-negotiable and that user data will only be used to process user requests. The new Siri is fueled by Apple foundation models powered chiefly by Google Gemini. ” Apple demonstrated several multi-step tasks.
In one, Siri identified a musician’s next show, set a reminder to buy tickets, and played one of their songs. In another, it created a recipe list for a World Cup watch party and sent an invitation via text message that included an AI-generated menu.
Siri’s on-screen awareness feature allowed it to reference an Instagram photo of a nature spot, identify the location, compare it to an address mentioned once in text messages, and create a driving route with a stop at that address.
The system can also add calendar appointments, draft texts or emails, and mimic the user’s writing voice for specific recipients. Dynamic Island will display new AI-powered information cards from world events, weather, calendar, and reminders. Siri is integrated into the Photos app, allowing queries such as whether boots will fit into an REI backpack or whether the backpack will work as a carry-on for a specific booked flight.
Apple Intelligence allows AI-edited images in more styles and can organize Safari tabs in new ways. A “describe an extension” feature lets Siri generate code for certain webpages. A one-tap solution allows Siri to update eligible accounts with strong passwords.
In-text one-tap prompts let Siri create reminders or send all photos taken of a person on a given day. During a phone call to an airline, Siri surfaces a card with relevant flight information based solely on the recipient of the call. Mike Rockwell, head of Siri, presented the on-screen awareness demonstration.
The new Siri will launch in beta later in 2026. There is no timeline for the EU and China, which Apple attributes to regulatory difficulties. The new operating system announced alongside Siri AI is macOS Golden Gate.
Apple’s initial Apple Intelligence rollout led to delays that resulted in a class-action settlement. The company also paused AI notification summaries after they falsely reported that Luigi Mangione shot himself. In 2025 at WWDC, Federighi said Apple was continuing its work to deliver features that make Siri even more personal.
