Apple, Google, and Meta provide optional security modes that limit device functions to reduce exposure to targeted spyware attacks. The features are available on iPhones, Android devices, and accounts on their respective platforms.

Mode blocks attachments other than images, video, and audio in iMessage, removes link previews, and disables incoming FaceTime calls from unknown contacts. It also prevents automatic connections to open Wi-Fi networks and blocks installation of configuration profiles.

Users enable the mode through Settings, Privacy & Security. Apple has stated that no successful attacks have been recorded on devices with the mode active as of March.

Program, introduced in 2017, requires a physical security key or passkey for account access and enables additional email scanning for phishing. On Android devices, it restricts app installations to official stores and activates Google Play Protect. Users activate the program through its dedicated page after signing in and adding recovery options.

Mode, introduced last year, enables Memory Tagging Extension on supported devices and automatically locks the device upon detection of suspicious motion. It also blocks apps from unknown sources and prevents updates from previously sideloaded apps. Runa Sandvik, a security researcher, stated that the features are free, easy to enable, and the best defense available against sophisticated spyware.
