Apple's iOS 17 Wired Accessories Default Setting Allows Automatic USB Connections When Unlocked

Apple released iOS 17, which includes new Wired Accessories settings for iPhones equipped with USB-C ports, such as the iPhone 15, 16, and 17 models. These settings control USB accessory connections, separate from charging functions. The options available are: Always Ask, Ask for New Accessories, Automatically Allow When Unlocked, and Always Allow.

The default setting in iOS 17 is Automatically Allow When Unlocked, meaning USB accessories connect without prompting if the iPhone is unlocked. This applies to hundreds of millions of users with compatible devices. Charging occurs regardless of the data connection setting.

A Reddit user described plugging their iPhone into a hotel USB charging port overnight under the default setting. The next day, they checked the settings and realized the connection had been allowed automatically. When they changed it to Always Ask and tested it, a prompt appeared asking for confirmation to connect the accessory.

Multiple reports on Reddit and other forums have highlighted this default, warning users about risks from physical USB access exploited by spyware. Recent alerts have noted dangers from cabled connections in public or untrusted locations. Apple previously limited USB access through background settings but expanded options in iOS 17.

If the default were Ask for New Accessories, it would prompt once for new devices before allowing future automatic connections when unlocked. Prompts may appear for chargers or computers, serving as a security check. Users can adjust the setting by navigating to Settings
