macrumors.comApple announced the latest version of macOS, named Golden Gate. The update centers on a relaunched Siri AI that can be accessed from anywhere on the desktop. The new Siri AI carries features from iOS and iPadOS versions, including a dedicated app, screen awareness, automatic proofreading, personal context, and a customizable voice.
It runs on Apple Foundation Models based on Google Gemini for improved natural language processing, computer vision, and image generation. Siri AI can now be opened with a right-click in any context window. In Finder, users can select files and prompt Siri AI directly.
Spotlight will also switch to Siri AI when a question fits a chatbot format.
Safari gains Topics, which automatically groups tabs using AI. Users can close or save these groups later. Custom Extensions allow creation of browser extensions through natural language prompts. Safari will also work with the Passwords app to flag and update unsafe login credentials.
The Shortcuts app now accepts natural language instructions to build automated workflows, such as calculating travel time and sending it via message. Image Playground received an update based on Google Gemini image technology. It can generate photorealistic images, though daily limits apply and paid iCloud+ subscriptions increase the allowance.
Tweaks macOS Golden Gate refines the Liquid Glass interface introduced last year. A refraction effect in transparency reduces background visibility and improves text readability. Users can adjust transparency levels in System Settings. Toolbars now show a uniform menu, sidebars extend to window edges, and sidebar icons regain color.
All windows share the same corner radius on control buttons. Apple also reports gains in memory use, CPU performance, display rendering, and app switching.
