Apple Working on Automatic Tab Organization Feature for Future Safari Versions

Apple is preparing a new Safari capability that automatically groups open tabs, set to arrive with this year's major operating system updates. The feature will give users the choice of automatic or manual organization and will not carry the Apple Intelligence branding. Engadget reported the development on May 10, 2026, citing Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Apple is working on a Safari feature called Organize Tabs that will automatically organize users' tabs into groups. The Organize Tabs feature will debut with iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Once available, Safari users will be able to choose whether they want the grouping to be automatic or not.

Gurman added that the Organize Tabs feature will not carry the Apple Intelligence label, even though it is likely using some form of artificial intelligence. The development comes as Apple has been known to lag behind its competitors when it comes to AI-powered features. This Organize Tabs feature adds onto the Tab Groups option that was introduced to Safari 15 back in 2021.

Google debuted a similar capability on Chrome called Organize Similar Tabs in January 2024 and marketed it as one of its new generative AI features. The first look at the Organize Tabs feature could occur at WWDC26, which is scheduled to kick off on June 8. Engadget reported these details in an article published on May 10, 2026.

For users who keep hundreds of Safari tabs open, the forthcoming Organize Tabs tool aims to bring order without requiring manual effort. The option to toggle automatic grouping is expected to give those who prefer full control the ability to disable the behavior.
