Armed police from the Police Mobile Service arrived at Capital Hill in Malawi around 11 a.m. on July 1 in a police bus and fanned out across both entry gates to stop and search vehicles entering and exiting the government complex. The operation lasted about one hour.
National Police spokesperson Lael Chimtembo stated that the officers were on site undergoing an induction exercise. She said the deployment formed part of a wider effort to increase police visibility across Capital Hill, the City Centre and surrounding areas in order to reduce response times during emergencies. Police confirmed that no specific incident prompted the operation.
Chimtembo added that such activity would be routine and that people should not be surprised to see the officers performing their work.
