Armenians vote in a parliamentary election on June 7. The contest centers on the government's efforts to open borders with Azerbaijan and Turkey and to adjust ties with Russia. Residents in the northern town of Ijevan cited new roads and local improvements as reasons for supporting the ruling party. One 40-year-old voter said the country had become more recognizable internationally.

The ruling party leads polls with roughly 30 percent support.

Its main rival, a Russian-Armenian billionaire, trails with 6 to 11 percent and favors closer ties with Moscow. Russia has restricted some Armenian exports and warned of possible cuts to energy supplies. Surveys show about one-third of Armenians now view Russia as a threat.

European officials have expressed interest in greater Armenian trade with the West. The election is the first since Azerbaijan regained control of Nagorno-Karabakh in 2023, displacing around 100,000 ethnic Armenians. No final peace agreement has been signed.

Opposition figures and rights groups have raised concerns about detentions of critics. Some candidates argue the government has made too many concessions in peace talks.
