Artemis II Crew Breaks Record for Farthest Distance from Earth by Humans During Moon Fly-By

The Artemis II crew achieved a new record for the farthest distance from Earth ever traveled by humans during their lunar fly-by mission. This surpasses the previous record set during the Apollo 13 mission in 1970, when astronauts reached approximately 400,000 kilometers from Earth. The current record was confirmed by NASA mission control in Houston.

The Artemis II mission, launched on September 16, 2024, involves four astronauts: NASA commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, mission specialist Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen. The crew is conducting a 10-day test flight around the Moon without landing. The fly-by positions the spacecraft at its farthest point, known as the far side of the Moon.
