Athletics Outfielder Zack Gelof Exits With Right Knee Injury After Sliding Catch

Athletics outfielder Zack Gelof left the third inning of a 4-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers on July 9 after injuring his right knee. Gelof slammed the knee into the left field fence in foul territory while making a sliding catch on a fly ball hit by Zach McKinstry. The play occurred with McKinstry leading off the third inning of a scoreless game on a pitch from Jack Perkins.

Gelof made a long run into foul territory before sliding for the catch. He immediately grabbed his knee, showing a tear in his uniform pants, then limped back to position before collapsing again. Manager Mark Kotsay said after the game that Gelof suffered a deep cut underneath his right kneecap.

"Fortunately, it just missed the tendon," Kotsay told reporters. " Gelof was replaced by Colby Thomas, with Lawrence Butler shifting to right field. Gelof had grounded out in his only at-bat in the second inning.

273 with 11 home runs and 29 RBI this season. The 26-year-old was activated from the injured list on July 4 after a bruised right hand ended a 24-game hitting streak on June 23.
