The Atlanta Hawks are declining Jonathan Kuminga's $24.3 million team option, making the forward an unrestricted free agent, ESPN reported. Kuminga, who will turn 24 before the next NBA season, played in 16 regular-season games for the Hawks after joining the team via trade in February. He averaged 12.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 22.1 minutes per game while coming off the bench.
The Hawks acquired Kuminga and Buddy Hield from the Golden State Warriors in exchange for Kristaps Porzingis. The move followed a summerlong contract dispute between Kuminga and the Warriors. Kuminga scored 27 points in his Hawks debut on February 24 against the Washington Wizards.
He reached 20 points in only two other regular-season games. In the Hawks' first-round playoff series against the New York Knicks, Kuminga scored 19 points in one win and 21 points in another. He totaled 34 points across the final three games of the series.
The seventh overall pick in the 2021 draft has career averages of 12.5 points and 4.2 rebounds per game over five seasons. The Sacramento Kings, who expressed strong interest in Kuminga before the trade, are expected to pursue him as a free agent.
