The Atlantic announced the addition of three staff writers. Ariel Sabar, who has contributed to the magazine as a freelancer since 2015, will focus on in-depth narrative reporting. Joshua Partlow and Sebastian Smee are both joining from The Washington Post.
Partlow will cover extreme weather and natural disasters.
He previously wrote about environmental issues in the American West and served as a foreign correspondent in Latin America and the Middle East. Ariel Sabar will continue narrative reporting. His past work for the magazine includes stories on a biblical artifact at Oxford, a solar power investment scheme, and a disputed ancient text.
Sebastian Smee will write about visual art and its influence on modern life and culture. He previously served as art critic for The Washington Post and The Boston Globe. The announcement was issued by the magazine on June 23, 2026.
