Auburn defeated UCLA 4-1 on Wednesday to win the NCAA men's golf championship at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad. The top-seeded Tigers secured their second national title in three years by taking the first three matches of the final. Auburn's Jake Albert defeated UCLA's Tyler Loree 5-and-3.

Jackson Koivun beat Baylor Larrabee 4-and-3 after making a birdie on the 15th hole. Logan Reilly defeated Alex Papayoanou after Papayoanou mishit his tee shot on the 18th hole. Josh Kim led Josiah Gilbert 3-up through 14 holes when the match concluded.

UCLA coach Armen Kirakossian said his team came out nervous and gave up some holes early. UCLA entered the championship match as the seventh seed after advancing through a four-team playoff in stroke play. The Bruins defeated sixth-seeded Arizona and second-seeded Texas in match play on Tuesday.

UCLA held a losing record in the middle of the spring season before winning the Big Ten Championships. The team did not advance past stroke play in the previous season and last reached the NCAA championship match in 2008. Kirakossian said dropping strokes near the end of stroke play last week put the team in a playoff that created a hyper intense competitive zone.

He said the playoff celebration gave the players a big boost of energy that prepared them for match play. Larrabee said Koivun showed him the level it takes to get a PGA scorecard at 21 years old. He added that he has work to do over the offseason but is excited for it.

Kirakossian said the group has big hearts and is willing to compete and give it everything all the time. He said the team will try to do it again next year and re-earn everything.
