Police arrested two teenagers and sought a third after at least 10 random shootings across Austin over the weekend that injured four people. Officials issued and later lifted shelter-in-place orders in parts of the city.
nypost.comAustin police arrested a 15-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy after at least 10 random shootings across the city from Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning. The incidents left four people injured, including one with critical injuries. Officials said the suspects drove stolen vehicles and fired at two fire stations, apartment buildings, houses, and people on the street.
Police reported 20 emergency calls tied to the shootings in South and East Austin.
The two teens were stopped in a white Kia and arrested after attempting to run, police said. A third person who had been in the car fled and remained at large as of Sunday evening. Officials said the 15-year-old had stolen a firearm on Saturday and the 17-year-old had an existing warrant for stealing another gun.
Both weapons used in the shootings appeared to be stolen. A shelter-in-place order covered a large part of South Austin on Sunday while police searched for the suspects. The order was lifted after the two arrests, though a separate order remained in effect in the Manor area for the third suspect.
Two victims were shot while standing outside a store, and a man walking his dog was struck in the back, according to police reports. The suspects allegedly stole at least four vehicles during the spree.
“We don’t have any specific motive that has been identified. In fact, these actions appear to be random.”
Police stated there is no ongoing threat to the public. An investigation continues into the shootings and the role of the third suspect.
