Australia halves fuel excise cut to 16 cents a litre through early August before ending it

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will convene a virtual national cabinet meeting on 22 June 2026 to discuss fuel security after the government extended the fuel excise cut at a reduced rate. The 50 per cent discount, which has knocked 32 cents off each litre of petrol, will drop to 16 cents per litre from 1 July 2026 to 2 August 2026 before ending.

Labor frontbencher Tim Ayres called the tapering of the cut the "right call" amid ongoing uncertainty in the Strait of Hormuz.

"It'll make some difference. It's a careful judgement. It's the right call in the interests of Australian motorists," he told Nine. " The first shipment of urea secured with industry and the Indonesian government arrived in Brisbane on or before 22 June 2026.

Parliament resumed sitting on 22 June 2026 for a new sitting fortnight. The government hopes to secure a deal with the Greens and pass changes to the capital gains tax discount and negative gearing during the current sitting fortnight. Late on Friday, it emerged the government was open to delaying its proposed overhaul of the National Disability Insurance Scheme until August 2026 in exchange for the Greens' support on those tax changes.

Greens leader Larissa Waters stated on 22 June 2026 that the Greens are using every lever to stop or further inquire into the NDIS cuts. "We are having those discussions but we are using everything we've got to make sure that these cuts are actually stopped completely but at the very least inquired into even further," she told ABC's AM.

The federal government opened applications on 22 June 2026 to recruit a new commissioner and deputy commissioner of the National Anti-Corruption Commission.
