Australia Rolls Out Tax Cuts and Longer Parental Leave While National Home Values Dip 0.4 Percent

More than 14 million Australians received tax cuts of up to $268 starting 1 July 2026 as paid parental leave expanded from 24 weeks to 26 weeks. New federal laws addressing price gouging took effect for Coles and Woolworths on the same date. The three-month halving of the fuel excise ended, leaving a 16-cent-per-litre discount, while the Heavy Vehicle Road User Charge rose to 16 cents per litre; both measures are scheduled to taper off completely in August.

National dwelling values fell 0.4 percent in June 2026, the largest monthly decline since December 2022, according to Cotality data reported by Abc. Sydney values dropped 1.2 percent and Melbourne values fell 1.0 percent. Brisbane and Perth values continued to rise but at a slower pace, while Adelaide values remained flat.

Health Minister Mark Butler stated on 1 July 2026 that house-price movements are normal and not caused by the budget housing-tax changes. He said he is very confident in Treasury modelling that house prices will continue to grow, albeit more slowly. Butler added that he has no idea why his name is mentioned as a potential future Labor leader.

Housing Minister Clare O'Neil stated on 1 July 2026 that month-to-month house-price movements are driven primarily by interest rates. She said Treasury modelling shows the budget housing-tax changes, which restrict negative gearing to newly built homes and replace the 50 percent capital-gains discount with an inflation-indexed model, will have a modest affordability effect.
