Australia's One Nation Party Secures First Lower House Seat in By-Election

One Nation candidate David Farley won the Farrer by-election in New South Wales with around 60 percent of the primary vote. The result marks the first time the right-wing populist party has secured a seat in Australia's House of Representatives in its 30-year history. The by-election followed the resignation of the previous member and signals shifting voter sentiment away from traditional parties.

One Nation candidate David Farley won the Farrer by-election in New South Wales on Saturday with an unassailable lead of about 60 percent of the primary vote, securing the right-wing populist party's first-ever seat in Australia's lower house. With most ballots counted, Farley led independent candidate Michelle Milthorpe by a wide margin in the vast regional electorate.

The centre-left Labor Party did not field a candidate in the contest, which will not alter its majority in the House of Representatives. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of the previous member in February. One Nation had never before won a federal lower house seat despite three decades in existence.

The victory comes as polls show growing support for right-wing parties in several countries. One Nation leader Pauline Hanson told supporters the win was not limited to Farrer but represented a broader shift. She said the party was now targeting additional seats.

Farley, whose background is in agribusiness, declared that the party had reached the end of its beginning. He used a metaphor of carving new letters into Australian democracy with a chisel and hammer.

What are we doing tonight? He said his approach would protect industries reliant on migrants who assimilate while refusing entry to those who would draw on public resources without contributing. He also pledged to address the cost of living with policies designed for Australia rather than international considerations. During the campaign Farley said he had lost faith in the major parties because they say one thing to voters and do another in parliament. Michelle Milthorpe congratulated Farley but warned that translating voter anger into concrete results would prove far more difficult than reflecting it. She described the next two years as a test for the party. The electorate of Farrer covers 127,000 square kilometres, an area larger than South Korea, and includes regional centres such as Albury, Griffith and Deniliquin. It had previously been held only by the two main conservative parties.

The outcome aligns with recent advances by similar parties elsewhere. Earlier this week a right-wing populist party in Britain recorded significant gains in local elections at the expense of the governing party. In Germany nearly every major poll now shows the right-wing AfD in first place as frustration builds over the governing coalition's direction after one year in office.

The Australian result is viewed as an important test of One Nation's appeal beyond its traditional base in the Senate where Pauline Hanson has served. The party first rose to prominence in the late 1990s when Hanson held a lower house seat as an independent before losing re-election.

Saturday's poll used Australia's preferential voting system in which voters rank candidates and preferences are distributed until one achieves a majority. Final tallies confirmed Farley's decisive win. The contest also served as an early measure of public sentiment toward the new leaders of the opposition conservative parties following their poor performance in last year's federal election and subsequent internal difficulties.
