Australian Commuters Increase E-Bike Purchases Amid Rising Fuel Prices
Retailers in Australia report higher sales of e-bikes as fuel costs rise due to global events. Commuters cite increased fuel expenses as a key factor in switching from cars. Industry representatives note growing interest in e-bikes as a cost-effective alternative.
High fuel prices in Australia have led some commuters to purchase e-bikes as an alternative to car travel. Retailers in Perth and Fremantle report significant increases in e-bike sales following recent fuel price hikes. These changes occur amid supply disruptions linked to the Middle East war.
Perth resident Sam Hoskisson purchased an e-bike after diesel prices rose, increasing his weekly fuel bill from $60 to $165 for his four-wheel drive. He had considered the switch for over a year but decided after seeing daily increases of 10 to 15 cents per liter. Hoskisson expressed anxiety over unpredictable fuel costs.
“Every day when I was driving to work I was seeing it go up 10, 15 cents a litre.”
At Glen Parker Cycles in Perth, owner Dennis Lightfoot reported sales rising from three or four e-bikes per week to nearly 30 in the last 10 days. Many buyers mentioned fuel prices as a reason for their purchase. Lightfoot noted that some customers had not previously considered e-bikes.
In Fremantle, Mercer Cycles owner Greg Stoyles observed that customers on the verge of buying e-bikes have now committed due to fuel costs. Inquiries have also increased for repairs, replacements, and new tires on existing bikes to reduce car usage. Stoyles reported these trends in recent weeks.
Nationally, Bicycle Industries Australia has noted strong growth in e-bike interest. General manager Peter Bourke highlighted the popularity of entry-level models priced between $2,000 and $3,000. He compared these costs to annual car expenses, including insurance and registration at about $2,000, plus fuel, stating that e-bikes offer savings over time.
Bourke called for government investment in safe, connected infrastructure to support increased e-bike use beyond current fuel price fluctuations. A Transport for New South Wales spokesperson stated that public and active transport, including biking, are the most affordable options.
The spokesperson added that global events have influenced transport trends across networks, though specific data on volume changes in Perth's routes shows no clear shifts yet.
In Katanning, Western Australia, about 270 kilometers south of Perth, resident Katerina Widerington-Oliver purchased an e-bike to address concerns about regional living vulnerabilities amid high fuel costs. Recent data does not indicate overall changes in vehicle or cycle route usage in Perth's busiest areas.
