Australian girl, 10, killed and two relatives injured after Punjab police fired on family car during robbery response; officer arrested
A 10-year-old Australian girl was fatally shot by police in Pakistan on June 10 after officers mistook her family's vehicle for one carrying robbery suspects. Her father and brother were also injured.
Punjab Police fatally shot 10-year-old Hania Ahmed in Chakwal, Pakistan, on June 10, 2026. An officer fired into the family's rental car after mistaking the vehicle for one carrying armed robbery suspects who had just held the family at gunpoint. Hania Ahmed, a grade four student from Perth, Australia, was killed.
Her father, Adeel Ahmed, 39, and her 11-year-old brother, Aafan, sustained severe injuries. Her mother escaped unhurt. The two armed robbery suspects were killed in a separate shootout with police. Punjab Police registered a criminal complaint based on the father's statement.
The officer who fired on the family was arrested, appeared before a court, and was remanded in custody. " Albanese gave the girl's age as nine. The family was visiting relatives in Pakistan at the time of the incident.
Australia's foreign affairs ministry is providing consular assistance to the family.
