Officials stated that the success of these talks represents the best chance to lower fuel prices.
However, a "long tail" of impacts is expected even if the Strait of Hormuz, which was blocked by Iran and disrupting global oil supplies, reopens soon.
Australia has already halved its fuel excise until the end of June and suspended heavy vehicle road user charges. The government is monitoring developments in the coming weeks to determine if more support is needed in the May budget. Officials told ABC’s Insiders on Sunday that preparations must account for effects on businesses and farming communities, including the transport of goods and services.
The government plans to launch a TV, digital, and billboard campaign on Monday to encourage reduced fuel consumption.
The "every little bit helps" initiative serves as a practical guide to manage fuel supply chain pressures from the Middle East conflict. The campaign is reported to cost around $20 million. A shadow minister criticized the effort as "political propaganda" during an appearance on Sky News on Sunday.
He stated that Australians do not want taxpayer-funded lectures on driving less and that the campaign prioritizes political interests over solutions.
