Federal police have published photos of four items of children's clothing to identify potential victims. The images were recovered during an inquiry into a former childcare worker charged with 329 offences.
washingtonpost.comThe Guardian reported that the Australian Federal Police released photographs of four items of children's clothing, including a dinosaur puffer jacket, shorts with a blue pattern, a T-shirt with an animal pattern and a two-tone T-shirt. The images were recovered from electronic devices seized in the investigation of Hamish Tait, 35.
Tait has been charged with 329 offences related to the creation and distribution of child abuse material.
The alleged offences are said to have occurred at several of the 62 childcare centres he worked at or visited, primarily in Sydney. Police believe the images were taken between 2018 and 2023 at centres in Rouse Hill and Putney. Detectives found the clothing photographs on devices seized during the inquiry.
Within two days of the release, officers received more than 300 calls providing information. The investigation has now identified six additional victims, leaving 16 children still unidentified. Tait was arrested in July 2025 and has remained in custody since.
Police seized almost 2.5 million files from devices at his home at the time of the arrest. He was initially charged with eight counts and faced further charges in April, June and July 2026 that brought the total to 329, including 162 counts of producing child abuse material and 81 counts of filming a person engaged in a private act without consent.
A non-publication order protecting the investigation was lifted on Monday after a legal challenge.
Several of the centres named in the inquiry are owned by Fit Kidz, which stated that its focus remains on supporting those affected and strengthening child safety. Australian Federal Police Det Acting Insp Emmanuel Tsardoulias said every image may contain a clue that helps identify a child.
He added that investigators must be thorough to identify every victim and ensure families receive appropriate support.
