Ayn Rand Books Translated and Circulated in Turkey Since 1974

A single Ayn Rand-themed cafe operates in Ankara, the Turkish capital. Catalyst Coffee & Hub displays a black-and-white image of Rand on its logo and sits on Çankaya Hill near embassies and government offices. The cafe opened after a tax inspector examined copies of Rand's books on its shelves and discussed Objectivism with the owners before leaving without reviewing the accounts.

İnsanlar, the Turkish edition of We the Living, appeared in 1974 from a small publisher. Additional translations followed in later years but reached limited audiences. In 1997 the Journal of Liberal Thought published a Turkish version of Rand's 1964 Playboy interview.

Burak Bilgehan Özpek, then a university student, obtained a copy of The Fountainhead from a library and later translated passages by hand for distribution.

Turkey's major political traditions—Kemalist secularism, political Islam, and ethnic nationalism—each place collective goals above individual action. Rand's emphasis on individual achievement contrasted with these frameworks.

Rasim Ozan Kütahyalı met director Sinan Çetin in 2002. Çetin acquired Turkish rights to Rand's works and issued new editions through Plato Film Publishing. Çetin's introduction to The Fountainhead described a historical pattern in which creative individuals face social resistance and stated that wider reading of the novel might have altered Turkey's ideological development.
