The 21-year-old Argentine winger joined United's academy from Spain in 2020 and spent five years at the club. During his time there, he scored in the FA Cup final victory over Manchester City alongside Kobbie Mainoo. Garnacho stated that his behavior contributed to his reduced playing time in his final six months at United.
He explained that he was often on the bench at age 20 and felt pressure to play every game, leading to some mistakes on his part. His relationship with then-manager Ruben Amorim deteriorated during that period. Tensions escalated after United's Europa League final loss to Tottenham in May, where Garnacho was used only as a late substitute.
His brother Roberto posted on social media, accusing Amorim of throwing Garnacho under the bus. Garnacho also faced criticism for sharing an image of himself in an Aston Villa shirt with Marcus Rashford's name, another player out of favor with Amorim.
“I remember in the last six months I was just not playing like before at Manchester United. I started to be on the bench... In my mind, maybe it is also on me, I started to do some bad things.”
Reflections on United Tenure Garnacho acknowledged that leaving United caused him pain, as he loved the club.
United brought him from Spain to the academy and then to the first team, providing confidence and support over four to five years. He received strong backing from fans and staff at Old Trafford. Despite the acrimonious exit, Garnacho holds no bitterness toward United.
He described the move as a necessary change for his career progression. Garnacho stated he has only good memories of the club, teammates, and staff, with no regrets. > "Maybe yes [it hurt], because I loved that club... It's just sometimes you have to change for the good of your life or the next steps.
Performance at Chelsea In his first season at Chelsea, Garnacho has made 37 appearances across all competitions and scored eight goals. He has started 20 matches under manager Liam Rosenior, who took charge in January following Enzo Maresca. Rosenior praised Garnacho's reaction to not starting, noting his positive training attitude. Rosenior highlighted Garnacho's potential at age 21 and the need for consistency among young players. Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior told reporters that Garnacho showed real positivity as a substitute against Arsenal in March. The winger's adaptation continues amid Chelsea's ongoing season.
