Retrial Begins in Case of Diego Maradona's Death
A retrial over the death of Argentine footballer Diego Maradona starts on Tuesday. Seven members of his medical team face charges of homicide with possible intent for allegedly providing inadequate care. The first trial collapsed in May 2025 due to unauthorized filming in court.
A retrial into the circumstances surrounding the death of Argentine footballer Diego Maradona begins on Tuesday in San Isidro, Argentina. Maradona died on November 25, 2020, at age 60 from heart failure. The case involves accusations against seven members of his medical team for failing to provide proper care.
The first trial, held in May 2025, ended without a verdict after one of the three judges allowed unauthorized filming in the courtroom for a documentary. This decision led to the collapse of the proceedings. A new set of judges will now hear the case, with around 100 witnesses expected to testify, including Maradona's daughters.
Charges and Potential Penalties The seven individuals on trial are accused of homicide with possible intent.
Prosecutors classified the case as culpable homicide, similar to involuntary manslaughter. If convicted, the defendants face prison sentences ranging from eight to 25 years. At the time of his death, Maradona was recovering at his home in Tigre, Buenos Aires province, following surgery for a brain blood clot earlier in November 2020.
An autopsy confirmed that heart failure caused acute pulmonary oedema, a condition where fluid accumulates in the lungs. Investigators stated that the medical team was aware of the seriousness of his health condition but did not take necessary measures to address it. A panel of medical experts, appointed by prosecutors, reviewed the care provided at Maradona's home.
The panel described the treatment as deficient and reckless. It stated that Maradona would have had a better chance of survival with adequate treatment in an appropriate medical facility.
Key Figures in the Trial The defendants include Maradona's main medical adviser, neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, and psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov.
A former nurse, Dahiana Gisela Madrid, will face a separate trial. The proceedings are expected to continue until July 2026.
The statement read: "Thank you for having existed, Diego.
