US-Iran Ceasefire Nears End After Failed Talks in Pakistan

Vice President Vance concluded talks in Islamabad without an agreement to resolve hostilities with Iran, leaving 10 days in the current ceasefire. The discussions focused on Iran's nuclear program and access to the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump ordered the US Navy to interdict vessels paying tolls to Iran's IRGC.

Vice President Vance departed Pakistan on Sunday without reaching an agreement to end hostilities between the United States and Iran. The talks, held in Islamabad, involved US and Iranian officials. Ten days remain in the ceasefire between the two sides.

Vance spoke to reporters after the discussions. He described the talks as substantive but stated that no deal was reached. The US delegation included special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law.

Vance said the US delegation outlined its positions clearly to the Iranian counterparts. He noted that the Iranians did not accept the US terms. One key issue was Iran's nuclear program.

Nuclear Program Demands Vance stated that the US requires an affirmative commitment from Iran not to seek a nuclear weapon or the tools to achieve one quickly.

He expressed hope that such a commitment would emerge for the long term. President Trump addressed the same issue in an interview on Fox News's "Sunday Morning Futures" with host Maria Bartiromo. Trump said the negotiations were intensive and became friendly toward the end.

He indicated that agreement was reached on most points except Iran's nuclear ambitions. Trump described the nuclear issue as the most important point. A US official told NewsNation’s Kellie Meyer about the administration's red lines for Iran.

These include ending all uranium enrichment, dismantling major nuclear enrichment facilities, retrieving highly enriched uranium, accepting a broader peace, establishing a security framework with regional allies, ending funding for Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis, and opening the Strait of Hormuz without tolls.

Strait of Hormuz Tensions The Strait of Hormuz remains a sticking point.

Since the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran at the end of February, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has threatened ships passing through the waterway. The strait carried roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil in 2024, according to the US Energy Information Administration. The IRGC's actions have reduced shipping through the strait.

This has led to higher oil prices and US gas prices. 93 higher than a year ago, according to AAA. On Sunday, President Trump ordered the US Navy to block ships from passing through the strait and to interdict vessels in international waters that paid IRGC tolls.

Two guided-missile destroyers, the USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. and another, were involved in the operation. John Bolton, who served as national security adviser during Trump's first term, commented on the situation.

In an interview on “The Hill Sunday” with host Chris Stirewalt, Bolton said the Iranian government is unwilling to negotiate restrictions on its nuclear capabilities. He added that the ceasefire was a mistake after six weeks of military action, as it allows Iran time to recover and regroup.
