Bath and North East Somerset Council has opened a consultation on changes to parking charges that would tie permit costs to vehicle size. The consultation runs until 5pm on June 18. The council said the changes aim to improve road safety, encourage sustainable travel, and maintain the financial sustainability of its parking services.

Proposals include size-based charges for residents' permits, an increase in 24-hour parking fees at the three Park and Ride sites for non-bus users, and a requirement that vehicles hold a valid MOT to qualify for permits.

Under the plan, vehicle size would be measured in square metres by multiplying length by width, excluding wing mirrors, creating 11 charging bands. Vehicles up to five square metres would receive a £20 discount on a first permit. 22 on a second permit. 60 respectively. Blue Badge holders living in residents' parking zones would remain exempt.

An earlier consultation closed in November 2025. Fifty per cent of respondents supported size-based charges or discounts, and 38 per cent supported raising the 24-hour Park and Ride charge from £3 to £4 for non-bus users. The council will review all feedback before deciding on implementation.

Additional proposals include introducing parking charges on Weston Road and adjusting permit rules on Monmouth Street to accommodate Avon and Somerset Police moving into the city centre. " Councillor Manda Rigby, Cabinet Member for Communications and Community, said the council wants public views on increasing the cost of 24-hour parking at Park and Ride sites for motorists not using the bus service.
