Battery Electric Vehicles Reach Record Share of Australian New-Car Sales

Battery electric vehicles captured nearly one in four new cars sold in Australia in June, up from 7.6 per cent a year earlier, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries and the Electric Vehicle Council reported. More than 32,500 battery electric vehicles were delivered during the month, which also set an all-time national sales record.

Industry data attributed much of the increase to higher fuel prices rather than a broad shift in buyer preferences.

A professor of future urban mobility at Swinburne University stated that Australian owner experience aligns with international findings that modern batteries degrade more slowly than earlier projections indicated. Advances in battery chemistry, thermal management and battery management systems have produced only modest capacity loss over several years of use, the professor said.

Stanford University research cited by the professor showed that stop-start driving patterns can extend battery life by up to 38 per cent compared with constant-discharge laboratory tests. A 2024 Geotab study of 10,000 vehicles found newer models lose about 1.8 per cent of capacity annually, down from 2.3 per cent in 2019.

A separate analysis of 7,000 heavily used battery electric vehicles indicated most retained more than 80 per cent of original capacity beyond 200,000 kilometres.

Independent testing by the Australian Automobile Association found no electric vehicle matched its advertised range. Shortfalls against the WLTP standard ranged from about 5 to 11 per cent, while one national study placed the average real-world shortfall at 16 per cent.

Most battery electric vehicles sold in Australia carry an eight-year or 160,000-kilometre battery warranty. Out-of-warranty replacement costs can reach five figures, though modular designs now allow individual cell or module replacement at lower expense.
