Bayern Munich's Kane, Diaz and Olise Reach 100 Goals, Compared to Past Trios
Bayern Munich's forward trio of Harry Kane, Luis Diaz and Michael Olise has scored over 100 goals this season. BBC Sport compared them to other notable front threes ahead of the Champions League semi-final second leg against Paris St-Germain. The German team trails 5-4 after the first leg.
espn.co.ukMunich's forwards Harry Kane, Luis Diaz and Michael Olise have scored more than 100 goals across all competitions this season since linking up in August. This marks the fifth time a trio has reached that figure since the turn of the century. The achievement comes as Bayern Munich, which won the Bundesliga title last month, prepares for the second leg of the Champions League semi-final against Paris St-Germain on Wednesday, trailing 5-4 after the first leg.
The team has already secured the Bundesliga and aims to add the DFB Pokal and Champions League. Kane, Diaz and Olise each scored in the first leg against Paris St-Germain last week. Bayern Munich became the first team in German history to have a front three reach 100 goals in a single season.
Three-man forward lines gained prominence following Barcelona's success under Pep Guardiola from 2008 to 2012. Barcelona won two Champions Leagues and three La Liga titles during that period using a possession-based style with fluid movement between midfield and attack.
Lionel Messi often played centrally but dropped deep to create space or numerical advantages. This approach influenced other teams, including Real Madrid and Paris St-Germain. In the Premier League, Liverpool's trio of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah adopted a similar setup from 2017 to 2022, with Firmino linking play and creating opportunities for the wingers.
That group contributed to Liverpool winning the Champions League and Premier League.
Since 2013-14, only five front threes have scored 100 or more goals in a season. Barcelona's Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar achieved this three times consecutively from 2014-15 to 2016-17, with totals of 122, 131 and 111 goals. Real Madrid's Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema reached 100 in 2014-15.
Liverpool's Salah, Firmino and Mane scored 91 in 2017-18. Bayern Munich's current trio follows a previous high of 99 goals by Gerd Muller, Uli Hoeness and Willi Hoffman in 1972-73. Paris St-Germain's current forwards Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia have scored 48 goals this season.
St-Germain previously featured Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe as a front three. The current lineup under Luis Enrique emphasizes fluidity, with players rotating positions. Last season, Dembele, Goncalo Ramos and Bradley Barcola were the top scorers with 72 goals combined, while Doue, Kvaratskhelia and Dembele scored 55.
Bayern Munich's structure positions Diaz on the left, Olise on the right and Kane centrally. Paris St-Germain's setup focuses on creativity and adaptability in key matches.
