Bayeux Tapestry Reaches British Museum After Overnight Transport from France

The Bayeux Tapestry arrived at the British Museum in London at 02:50 BST on July 10, 2026, after a secret overnight transport from a location in northern France, @ABC reported. The 70-meter artwork traveled in a climate-controlled case inside a shock-absorbing cradle within a container the size of a small car.

A police-escorted truck carried it across the Channel Tunnel on a vehicle shuttle train for an 11-hour, 350-mile journey.

Museum staff and British and French diplomats applauded when the container was lowered to the ground. The tapestry will spend several days acclimatizing before unpacking for an exhibition expected to draw large crowds. Some 100,000 tickets sold on the first day they went on sale.

The loan was announced during French President Emmanuel Macron's state visit to the UK in July 2025. It coincides with renovations at the museum in Bayeux, France. In return, the British Museum will lend artifacts from the Sutton Hoo hoard and other items to museums in Normandy.

Stitched in wool thread on linen fabric, the tapestry depicts events leading to the Battle of Hastings in October 1066 across 58 scenes featuring 627 people and 737 animals. British Museum Director Nicholas Cullinan said the arrival followed extensive planning and care. Retired diplomat Peter Ricketts, the UK's special envoy for the tapestry, called the loan an extraordinary mark of friendship.
