BBC Airs Four-Minute Self-Promotional Advert During World Cup Final Coverage

The BBC interrupted its coverage of the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina to broadcast a nearly four-minute self-promotional advert, GB News reported. The film, produced by BBC Creative, features 90 BBC personalities led by Romesh Ranganathan.

It includes Claudia Winkleman, Graham Norton and Clare Balding, along with footage of the Queen Vic pub from EastEnders, David Jason as Del Trotter and Daleks from Doctor Who.

Radio 1 breakfast host Greg James, who receives an annual salary of £445,000, also appears. In the advert Ranganathan asks, "It's a good question... " Ranganathan credits the BBC with "introducing the nation to Adele" and Dame Mary Berry.

The piece references a 1986 BBC campaign with the slogan "There's a BBC for each of us. " The interruption came days after the BBC published its annual report for the 2025/26 financial year. The report showed 23.3 million households held a valid TV licence at year end, the lowest total since 1999.

The number of licence holders fell by almost 540,000 during the year, the steepest annual decline since the pandemic when 738,000 households stopped paying. Since the start of the decade the total has dropped by more than 2.5 million from 25.9 million, while households declaring they do not need a licence rose by 62,000 to 3.7 million.

A BBC spokesman said, "For more than 100 years the BBC has helped shaped who we are as a country and how the world sees us.

The BBC's director general said the broadcaster must prepare to be "open to all options" while ministers consider a review of its funding model.
