The BBC's Quentin Sommerville entered Myanmar without permission from the authorities and spent 10 days in rebel-held territory. He visited hospitals and front-line positions in Bago and Karen states while traveling with rebel fighters. Myanmar's military chief led a coup that overthrew the democratically elected government five years ago.

The BBC reported that civil war has since torn the country apart, with thousands killed and millions displaced in fighting between the military and an alliance of ethnic and rebel groups.
