Matt Brittin told a parliamentary committee the BBC has held discussions with Channel 4 about a possible streaming partnership. The comments followed Sky's £1.6 billion acquisition of ITV and came weeks after the BBC announced cuts to content spending and staff.
The Hollywood ReporterMatt Brittin, who became BBC director-general in May 2026, told a U.K. parliament culture committee on Wednesday that the BBC has held discussions with Channel 4 about a possible streaming partnership. The remarks came two days after Sky announced its £1.6 billion acquisition of ITV.
Brittin said the ITV-Sky deal would leave Channel 4 looking sub-scale and that one option for the smaller broadcaster would be to place content on the BBC's iPlayer while remaining ad-funded. He added that commercial, audience, public service and technical issues would need to be examined. The BBC announced last month that it would cut content spending by $107 million and eliminate 550 jobs.
Brittin informed staff of the reductions in a memo. Brittin described the broader media environment as one of real jeopardy, citing the scale and influence of a handful of U.S. and Chinese technology companies in content creation and distribution.
Channel 4 chief executive Priya Dogra said in May 2026 at the Creative Cities Convention that mergers were not the right path for the broadcaster. She stated that such deals amounted to acquisitions in which one party would subsume the other. ITV chief executive Carolyn McCall said she expects the Sky-ITV transaction to face a phase-two regulatory review that could take 12 to 18 months to complete.
A U.K. government proposal for a streaming levy to support public-service broadcasters was rejected in July 2025. Film and television lawyer Juliane Althoff said any BBC-Channel 4 platform would need to preserve each organization's distinct public-service obligations while addressing rights, licensing and governance differences.
The Hollywood Reporter has approached Channel 4 for comment.
