bleedingcool.comBBC Studios opened an investigation into Shirley Ballas after she participated in an unauthorised dance-themed cruise event last month. The 65-year-old head judge on Strictly Come Dancing allegedly received more than £10,000 for her appearance on the seven-night voyage that departed Southampton on May 9 aboard MSC Virtuosa and sailed through the Norwegian Fjords.
During the cruise, Ballas judged a passenger talent competition, delivered dance masterclasses, and took part in a question-and-answer session with fans.
She was photographed holding a distinctive scoring paddle while offering critiques of contestants' footwork and timing. The cruise company used elements from Strictly Come Dancing, including its theme tune, during the onboard contest, and Ballas wore a diamante suit designed specifically for her appearances on the programme.
BBC executives are described as "absolutely furious" about the situation.
The BBC contacted MSC Cruises regarding their use of Strictly branding. A press release originally published on the MSC Cruises website has been removed. " Sources claim Ballas was "hauled before chiefs" and asked to explain her involvement.
Ballas has served on the Strictly Come Dancing panel since 2017. The situation echoes a 2021 incident involving Nick Knowles, who faced BBC scrutiny after appearing in a Shreddies advertisement dressed as a builder. In July 2024, Ballas clashed with BBC executives after being reminded to "rein in" public comments during the Giovanni Pernice investigation.
GB News has reached out to the BBC and Ms Ballas for comment.
