A swarm of bees moved across the White House grounds on Friday, prompting reporters to take cover near the North Lawn. The insects later gathered on a tree near an existing hive. No stings were reported.
New York PostA swarm of bees crossed the White House grounds Friday and remained near the North Lawn for roughly 20 minutes. Reporters working in the media area took cover while the insects flew around them. NewsNation reporter Kellie Meyer posted on X that a swarm blocked the driveway. Fox News correspondent Alexandria Hoff described the event as a bee tornado.
The White House maintains a beekeeping program that began in 2009. The first lady added a new custom-made beehive with two colonies last month. The addition is expected to increase annual honey output by about 30 pounds. Before the latest addition, the bee population reached about 70,000 bees, according to the White House.
The program was explained to Britain's King Charles III and Queen Camilla during their visit last month. Viral video showed thousands of bees moving in a chaotic pattern before many converged on a nearby tree that already contained a large hive.
