Beijing’s liaison office in Hong Kong has been restructured, reducing the total number of departments from 24 to 23. The Economic Department was divided into Economic and Financial Department I and Economic and Financial Department II. The Education and Technology Department and Youth Work Department were merged into a single Education and Youth Department.
District-level changes The New Territories Work Department was split into New Territories East Affairs and New Territories West Affairs departments. The Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Work departments were renamed Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Affairs departments.
A comparison of the office’s organisational chart posted on its website Thursday with earlier internet archive records documented the changes. South China Morning Post reported that analysts described the moves as reflecting greater focus on financial, youth and district work and alignment with the latest national five-year plan.
