Bezos Earth Fund Has Allocated 28% of $10 Billion Climate Pledge
The fund created by Jeff Bezos has disbursed roughly $583 million toward its $10 billion goal through 2030. Officials say they remain committed to the original timeline despite slower spending rates.
A climate fund created by Jeff Bezos has allocated 28% of its $10 billion commitment to address global warming, leaving more than $7 billion unspent with four years remaining. Fund officials stated they intend to meet the 2030 deadline. Spending reached $183 million in 2025 and rose to at least $400 million in 2026.
The current annual rate remains below the level required to reach the full target. Officials described their process as focusing on long-term impact rather than rapid disbursement. A spokesperson said strategies include transforming food systems, protecting land and sea, and newer work in sustainable fashion and artificial intelligence.
The chief of science, data and systems change stated the fund evaluates whether supported organizations and measurable outcomes align with climate and nature benefits.
The fund previously granted more than $37 million to electrify U.S. school buses by 2030. Federal support for that effort has since been delayed or halted, and later grants totaled $6 million. The chief executive officer said philanthropy cannot replace federal programs.
Electric school buses now represent slightly more than 1% of the national fleet. Other large climate donors have adjusted their activities. The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative is winding down its climate portfolio. Breakthrough Energy reduced staff and paused some advocacy work.
MacKenzie Scott increased environmental grants to more than $1 billion in 2025.
