HBO host Bill Maher told his audience on his Friday night show that people who expressed disappointment that President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt "are not good people" and lack intelligence. The assassination attempt occurred on April 25 at the Washington Hilton during the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner.

A Secret Service officer was wounded in the incident but survived because he was wearing a ballistic vest. Federal prosecutors charged 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, a California teacher and engineer, with attempting to assassinate the president after recovering a manifesto that detailed plans to target Trump administration officials.
Maher said reactions wishing for Trump's death showed a lack of goodness. "This is why I was against this ‘He’s Hitler’ bulls—t," Maher told the audience. "If you really believe that he is a Hitler McPedophile, then you kind of have to kill him. " He added that killing Trump would not end the MAGA movement.
Examples of such reactions included an Ohio pre-K teacher, Corrine Baum, who lost her job at BrightPath after a TikTok video appeared to lament Trump's survival, and a Wisconsin social studies teacher, Patrick Meyer, who was placed on administrative leave after posting on X to mock the failed attempt by referencing historical assassins like John Wilkes Booth.
Separately, President Trump posted on Truth Social criticizing Maher's interview with California Gov. Gavin Newsom. Trump wrote that Maher was "weak" and "totally deficient" in challenging Newsom. ’" Trump referenced a past White House dinner with Maher arranged through musician Kid Rock after an appearance on Maher's podcast, calling Maher nervous and pathetic.
Newsom's press office responded by posting that the interview triggered Trump's reaction. Maher has expressed skepticism about California's management in recent years, including high taxes and regulations, and questioned Newsom during the interview on issues like gas prices, rents, and the state's train project.
